Stan, have you tried the 5.1 version of the Exchange module? We are using it
for our Exchange cluster with 7.4PSP1 with no issues. Also, what version of the
legato client are you running on the exchange server?

A couple of things to try:

1) Running the isinteg to check to see if there is corruption in the storage
group
2) Creating more storage groups and more public stores and separating mailboxes
out by logical grouping. This fixes two problems. One, it will lock a store
less because it's smaller. Also, if there is any corruption, it's easier to
isolate it to a particular store.
3) What anti-virus software are you running? I've seen some older anti-virus
software create problems locking files that cause issues with backups and
exchange. Symantec for example, used to have to manual tell it not to scan
certain directories. Newer versions are more exchange aware by default.

Subject: [Networker] Exchange backup crashes Exchange

I have an Exchange 2003 server running on a dual node active-passive
clustered MS 2003 environment. The backup server is NetWorker 7.4 SP1
on a Sun T2000 with Solaris 10. The Exchange server is using the
Exchange 5.0 applications module for its backups and there are around
600 users with around 400GB worth of data. Every once in a while, like
maybe once every two or three months, the daily IS full backup slows
down to a crawl and eventually, it holds onto resources on the
Exchange server so long that it crashes Exchange. This, of course,
pisses off our Exchange server's users, of which I am fortunately not
one of them.

In researching this issue, I found nothing on PowerLink, but a
colleague did find the following article on Microsoft's web site;
however, it does not give any recommendations on how to fix the
problem as far as I can tell. I am not an Exchange user, nor am I
involved with managing our Exchange server so I am not in the best
position to troubleshoot this issue. I have a case opened with EMC on
this problem, but EMC hasn't responded yet.

Here's the web page my colleague found ...

  <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905801>

If this problem rings a bell with you, please let me know of any
suggestions on how to fix it.

Also, I am wondering if it would be better to abandon the use of the
NetWorker Exchange module and use the VSS client to do Exchange
backups instead. If anyone has any experience using the VSS client for
Exchange backups, please let me know. In researching this backup
problem I found a white paper on using the new VSS client for Exchange
backups and it looks pretty interesting.
