The reason I ask about a client being loaded on ESX is because future
servers will have VM firmware embedded in the server which I would think
negate loading a client.

Hello,
If you are trying to use vmware consolidated backup you will need either "

Linux" Client licence ( not sure how that works if your Netwoker server is

Linux based) & yes that will need to be loaded on to ESX Console, also you

need to keep VM Server Down to get a good backups, alternatively other
methods mount the VM Snapshot to proxy server, not sure what exact method
were followed.
And you also need Licence to do VCB on VM side.
ESX Ranger, Netapp, Avamar have their own routine to handle VM backups.

Is there an enabler or client you need on the networker side to do this?
Just interested for our own use and wondering if you load a Networker
client into ESX or how that is accomplished.
