First of all, vcb really sucks and the documentation for it is worse,
but it is useable (barely).

For us it is a 3 step process
1) Do a snapshot of the vm instance
2) save it
3) release the snapshot

We do have this as a scripted process that kicks of via savepnpc

I've posted the outline of the script before, so you should be able to
search the archives for it.
As other people have and will point out, other solutions are better. I
happen to like vRanger.
