Hello
As this debates goes on an on, i would like to chime in to.
>From all the posts it appears that platform of choice is Solaris (
Provided you have Unix expertise), where OS is mature and drivers are
stable, Networker is native and the fixes are provided first up.
I happen to be in Windows Camp and i am intimidated by Solaris, over many
years i have used Windows server, it has come along fine, now on Windows
2003 64 bit and the hardware is reasonable priced, we have several
monitoring tools, MOM, WSUS, SMS etc which keep an eye on the server, i
have automated tape withdrawal through simple scripts and control M
external scheduler, outside of networkers own Tape & Device management
headaches, Windows server maintenance is second nature to us, drive
re-sequencing continues to be an issue, however, recent IBM Tape drivers
address that shortcoming.
Scripting some networker task is more prevalent with Unix\Linux however,
CGIWIN, Unix tools from MS and pearl can help restore them on Windows etc.
As far as performance goes, i have been happy with the load that Windows
server has carried, we have added two other sn servers to complement
backing up over 7 TB ( FULL) and 3 TB Incremental schedule, VTL has helped
us provide speedy restores as well.
Overall, i am happy with Windows, server and i would recommend you stay
with it if you are in Windows Camp, if you have significant Solaris
expertise , that platform will serve you best.

Re: [Networker] best platform for newest networker?
A big mistake to goto Linux
- Capital cost saving is great and operation cost is great too
- Good finger pointing exercise with your hardware vendors and Linux
service providers
- Poor hardware management / hot plug support / stability
- Free endless bug finding exercise
- Good for a small environment only
If I had a choice, I would go Solaris / SPARC.

Well,
you
are
close,
but:
1.
The
filsystem(s)
in
Linux
are
perfectly
fine
for
Networker
use
2.
The
SAN
stack
os
also
OK.
