In NetWorker software releases 7.1 and later, if a VSS client license is
present (for all
Windows operating systems except Vista, which does not require a VSS
client
license), NetWorker software uses VSS technology to create snapshot
backups of
volumes and exact copies of files, including all open files.

You would not need OFM for the XP clients, you would use VSS like you
would on Vista, or Server 2003.

VSS and OFM are two different things, OFM is a separate piece of
software that would need to be loaded on the clients and has it's own
licensing, not VSS. VSS is part of the Windows OS, you would not need
to load anything but the normal networker client. You would then of
course need VSS licenses on the server for it to use VSS.

Subject: [Networker] Open File Manager on Windows XP

Hi all,

I have another windows related question (apologies if its a stupid
question - I've never had to backup windows clients prior to now!).

My understanding is, to back up open files on Windows Server 2003, I use

the VSS client. But on Windows XP I use Open File Manager. My reseller

has told me that each XP client using Open File Manager requires a VSS
license on the server.

Is this correct? I'm afraid I have to double-check everything they tell

me now, since they gave me incorrect information about being able to use

a Linux server to backup 2003 Server using VSS.

Thanks,

Nick
