yes i think another reason you might need it is if you have different
tape technologies and are sharing the library. Not sure though. Would be
much easier to configure as an autochanger and take acsls out of the
equation. I would check with SUN/STK on your configuration to see if
that is possible.

I am working on a site that is using acsls on L700 libraries. Is it
possible that it is in use with the objective of sharing the library?
Does acsls control library sharing?
