Hello,
I also have a test install of server instance on XP workstation from which 
i tried to connect to the master server via NMC but got error, ( seems 
like NMC is trying to connect locally even for remote server host). I 
thought that since port numbers are same between the units it may not 
connect, so i reinstalled one and changed to different NMC port, that did 
not help either.
NMC guide explains the restart process and there are actually 3 processed 
that needs to be looked at as listed below.
dbsrv9.exe
gsttclsh.exe
gstd.exe
I will be going after them the next time this hits us, meanwhile i also 
have a alternate means by utilizing old nwadmin pointed to production 
server for monitoring.
