I'm not the SQL Admin, so I dunno. :-) I did ask the guy who admins this 
server if there had been any changes to the security or user settings, and 
he said no. I'll ask again.

No, the backup account is a separate account from the service account, 
which is - I think - the recommended method (if you use the same account, 
and it has a problem - inadvertently change a password, etc - it doesn't 
take down all everything).

Nothing that I can see ....

I'd have to schedule some time for the uninstall / reinstall (knowing 
Windows, I'd want to reboot between the uninstall and install, just to be 
sure).
