This is just what i need as I have a VTL that has enough space to store data
for 3 weeks. I have a requirement for a 3 month retention and browse period. So
my current method is to backup to VTL and clone to tape using 3 month
retention. Then when the clone is complete and i have used mminfo to make sure
there are 2 copies of all savesets i re-label the Virtual tape so that i have
space on the VTL for the next backups. I have to do this manual procedure about
twice a week.

I will now attempt the following:
3 week retention of backup pool that is used by VTL (called 3monthVTL)
3 month retention of clone pool that is used by physical tape (called
3monthClone)
The VTL backups should expire after three weeks and the clone backups will
still exist for three months. I will have to make sure that the clones complete
successfully - maybe using mminfo script to report numbe of copies twice a week
and then manually cloned and missed savesets.

What should the retention period on the clients be set to?
Will the pool retention periods rule over the client retention periods?

  Thanks again.

It's an enahancement from 7.3 and up.

Fundametally the change was to move the field representing the retention
period from the saveset record into the clone records.. So now two
clones of the same saveset can be different.

In older versions of networker the retention on a saveset would usually
come from the client record. In 7.3 additionally you can set a retention
period on a pool.

What I have done so far is to leave most pools without a retention
period, so everything works like before, except on just one clone pool I
set a retention period - then as savesets are cloned to that pool the
clones get a different retention period... Other people may wish to set
retention periods on all pools - there's a whole new set of design
considerations here, I wonder what other people have come up with?
