Killing nsrmmd on a tape device used to fix things up - but not in the
later versions. In the later versions killing nsrmmd's leads to a
situation that can only be fixed by restarting everything (or maybe it's
a matter of waiting long enough.

Next time, before hitting the big red button, try putting the device
into and out of service mode, followed by nsrjb -HHvvvv
