When each savegroup completes, Networker executes a program that is specified in the notification resource for savegroup completion. The input to that program is the standard output of the savegroup. This savegroup output was being truncated to 570 bytes. We run (and apparently, looking at this list, a lot of others also run) scripts on this output to monitor successes and failures, and do accounting on how much was backed up for each save set. When the output was truncated, it was more or less worthless.

Could you explain what you mean by truncation problem?
Thanks.

For all interested parties, EMC has issued a patch to fix the 7.4
savegroup notification truncation problem. The patch ID for Solaris
SPARC is LGTsc07669. (Not sure if there's a different ID for other
arch/OS') We've tested this, and it did resolve the issue. Things are
looking up.

Hi Jon,

I opened up a support call with Sun about the truncated savegroup
notification problem. They sent me new nsrd and savegrp binaries
which seem to have fixed the problem.

So if you open up a support call with Sun you'll probably get those
sent to you too.

Well isn't that just dandy. And we skipped 7.3.3, because it didn't
arrive under our support contract, yet 7.4 did. I'll see if I can
get a copy of that to test with. should be backward compatible. We
certainly are using a lot of 7.3.2 clients (and earlier) against our
7.4 server without a problem.

Thanks for the tip!

Actually, 7.4 is a released version. Sun is shipping their re branded
Networker 7.4. They wouldn't do that with beta software, even
though 7.4
may be buggy enough to feel like beta code.

We are now using 7.4 (unfortunately). aside from the truncated
savegroup notifications, which is a huge problem, it's working well.
The GUI is ...way.. faster, and more clean, though not radically
different. Still no working Mac x86 client, if you can believe that.
My understanding is that will be out in 7.4.1. Can't say much more
than
that about it yet. Only been using it in production for a week.

Finally have automatic update of clients, not all OS'
There are some improvements on the GUI. You can stay on the
library window
now to answer operator questions
Dashboard, and Backup Advisor are plugins - still have to pay
New reports in numbers of inactive files (but not told what they are)
Saveset expiration now available on the group, but not the client
(So now
you have client browse & retention, group saveset expiration, and
tape
retention)
You can copy groups, and all the clients

Basically, IMHO, 7.4 is more user friendly.

That being said, we have been running 7.4 here for two weeks now.
The upgrade went smooth, and we are now in the process of upgrading
all of our agents. Minor changes in gui.
My understanding is that 7.4 offers a dashboard GUI that's not
available in 7.3.x. Is that correct? What are the big improvements
you have seen in 7.4? I am debating whether to go to 7.4 or 7.3.3.
