Is there no difference in the output of say 'sjirelem' or 'sjirdtag'
between open and closed? I would have thought that some of the values
in the IMPORT/EXPORT lines would flip when the door is open.

On my test library (an ancient ATL DLT model with one slot)

When door is closed:
# sjirelem 2.0.0
[...]
Element Data for 2.0.0, Element Type IMPORT/EXPORT:
        Elem[001]: pres_val=1 inp_enab=1 exp_enab=1 access=1 full=0 imp_exp=0

When door is open:
[...]
Element Data for 2.0.0, Element Type IMPORT/EXPORT:
        Elem[001]: pres_val=0 inp_enab=1 exp_enab=1 access=0 full=0 imp_exp=0

I can believe that it doesn't do the same thing on all libraries, and my
man page doesn't explain all implications of the 'access' field.
