i guess my question is .. where do you write your indexes? to the
master server or the storage node?

Hi Laura

If you have a storage node listed first, and 'nsrserverhost' listed
second, then there should be something in the log that will help us
understand why the first listed storage node wasn't used. Backups can
still work fine, even if you are 'failing' to use the intended storage
node.

Thanks Terry,

There is no error - backups run successfully - we just want the host to
choose the storage node device instead of the local device. The only
reason we have nsrserverhost listed in the storage node devices is
because it's safer to write the index to the master server instead of
the storage node. But, we don't want the actual data writing over the
firewall to the local device.

Hi Laura

"When a backup runs, it sometimes takes the storage node devices, but
often takes the server local drive."

If you have multiple entries in one of the client resource storage node
field's, I believe that NetWorker will try to use the first entry in the
list and will only use the second (or third ... ) entries if a request
is not completed within the relevant timeout values (check out the
NetWorker Administrator Guide section that discusses "Nsrmmd Control
Timeout)".

So, why would the first storage node in your ordered list be unable to
service a request? Anything interesting in daemon.log for the time
frame when hits error occurs?

Thanks

Subject: Networker and firewalls

We have a master server and four storage nodes. We were backing up alot
of data over firewalls - our network admin doesn't like - so we moved a
few storage nodes inside. In the ordered list of storage nodes for the
client, i have hostname and nsrserverhost because i want the index to
write to the master server. I am using DDS with SAN attached FC
devices. When a backup runs, it sometimes takes the storage node
devices, but often takes the server local drive. If the backup takes
the server local tape drive, the backup is running across the firewall
again :(. Is the only way to get the backup to run only on storage node
drive, to move the nsrserverhost out of the storage node devices and run
indexes separately?

This also happens when the staging policy i have set up runs - the data
stages to the localhost tape device instead of it's own tape device. I
could change the media pool to only allow the storage node devices, but
then again .. if nsrserverhost is not in client storage node list, no
index to master server.

Does this make sense to anyone.
I really appreciate any help.

thanks
