Even if its a workstation, you should find a spare server and install
the 7.3.2 client and NMC on it first... You can use this to manage your
7.2.1 system, thereby gaining some familiarity with the console before
upgrading the 7.2.1 server. Long term - I ended up putting NMC on a
separate server because I don't like having to upgrade the backup server
because of NMC problems, and also because NMC does use it's share of CPU
and memory. Another reason to put NMC on a separate box is if you intend
depoloying EBA (expensive) or Dashboard (cheaper cutdown EBA) - these
products integrate with NMC but really sock out your CPU memory and IO.

Don't forget that you need to put on an update enabler when going from
7.2 to 7.3, you need to get an auth code for that from EMC.

As for upgrading your server - I would go to the latest 7.2.2 (Build
494) first and run all the index and media database checking first
before upgrading to 7.3.x.

There are several aspects of mminfo queryspecs that may change (theres
more than one 7.2.1 out there so can't be exact about this) when you do
the upgrade, so if you have scripts be careful to check they are still
working the same an example that comes to mind is the behaviour of
something like this: "mminfo -q 'pool=fred,pool=wilma' -r
volume,pool".

nsradmin has a change that may affect scripts - 7.3+ doesn't take
wildcards anymore in the queryspecs...

nsrjb works utterly differently inside - although it has roughly the
same cmdline options the output from the -v flag is all new.

I intend to upgrade a Solaris 9 Power Edition server from 7.2.1. Its
been several years since the last time I did a NetWorker server software
upgrade. I just read the latest release notes and the new Administrator
Guide. I don't see anything about how to do this upgrade in the
Administrator's Guide, nor do I see that sort of information on the
PowerLink web site. Where can I find upgrade info?

This NetWorker server handles back ups for 250 servers that are a mix of
Tru64, Solaris 9, Mac OS X, Windows 2000/2003, and Linux. Almost all the
clients are running NetWorker 7.2.1. We also have a Solaris 9 storage
node. I know I will have to put NetWorker 7.3.2 with the Jumbo patch on
the storage node and the client at the same time, but is it recommended
that we upgrade the clients too?

I also intend to deploy the "new to me" NetWorker Management Console.
Our current NetWorker server is underpowered, but it is due to be
replaced in the next month or so with a much faster server, a Sun Fire
T-2000 and a lot more disk space. What I am wondering is if I should
deploy the NMC on our NetWorker server or put it on a different server.
What is best practice for deploying the NMC? I intend to use it to
provide all the reporting features.

I figure that it will be best to complete this project before replacing
our NetWorker server hardware, replacing our old storage node hardware,
and adding a second storage node into our data zone.

Any tips anyone has for doing this upgrade and/or deploying NMC will be
appreciated.
