"Demultiplex the saveset" sounds like something is happening to the
saveset as a whole.

The first copy of the saveset is presumably multiplexed on tape with
other savesets.  It will remain that way after the clone.

The second copy that you just cloned will not be.  You'd have to be
writing multiple savesets to have something to multiplex against.  So
backing up one saveset or cloning one saveset at a time always creates a
non-multiplexed copy.
