You could use a tool like Asigra....it's a block level backup tool
designed for servers, desktops and laptops. It includes compression,
encryption and deduplication so it's ideal for WAN based backup.

The real problem is with laptop/roaming users (i.e. field sales). They
ususally don't have any other option than to keep data critical to them
on a laptop. How do you schedule that backup? How do you throttle it?
Where do they backup to, HQ or closest office? (Strictly speaking about
data protection here, not security)

Not suggesting anything here...just sparking conversation =)

Good day James,

The backups are taken care of on the server side.
When ever the PC/laptop is online on the network and that the schedule
allows it, it will back it up.

I do agree with you that business information should not reside on any
PC, but a lot of users do not respect or understand that which is why
they create software like these. ;)

Regards,

I saw that software, but did not connect it to EMC. I do remember them
buying that sometime ago.

The premise of my question, is that if the person wants to backup his
PC, it is up to him. I may make a recommendation, and Retrospect may be
one. My original comment to him remains which is some of what he and
others are storing on his pc likely does not belong there.

Good day List,

The new software that replaces Networker Laptop is called Retropect
which comes from Dantz acquired by EMC.

They did. It was called "NetWorker Laptop" and it was OEM'ed from a
company called "Connected Corp." which has since been acquired by Iron
Mountain. Iron Mountain sells it now.

Is anyone aware of some good desktop backup software that they would
recommend which is cheap or free.

Legato (aka NetWorker) had one at one time, not sure if that was carried
over by EMC, but I thought they had dropped it.
