Hi,

Oracle documentation says:

"The level of multiplexing for a particular channel is determined by the minimum of the parameters FILESPERSET (default is 64), MAXOPENFILES (default is 8), and the number of files backed up on the channel (if specified)."

OK, I understand: FILESPERSET and MAXOPENFILES, but what is the third item: "number of files backed up on the channel"? I thought that was controlled by FILESPERSET. Are they talking about a third parameter? What is it called?

For example, if I have 2 channels and I specify filesperset 5 then I'm going to end up backing up 5 files per channel simultaneously. On NetWorker, I'll see 2 RMAN savesets writing to the drive at the same time since I have 2 channels. If I have 26 database files, and I'm running a full, I'll end up with 6 savesets at 5 files per set. The MAXOPENFILES defaults to 8 (per channel) so I don't need to specify that since 5 is less than 8. I've tested this, and this is what I've seen.

BUT: what, in this case, is controlling "number of files backed up on the channel" other than FILESPERSET? We're not specifying MAXPIECESIZE or MAXSETSIZE. Is there some third parameter they're not mentioning but somehow
inferring?

I must be missing something blatantly obvious here. Frying pan hitting my head repeatedly like on those smilies?

george
