In regard to: [Networker] FW: ADIC/Quantum - NEW Products!, Albert Eddie...:
Thoughts on De-Duplication? /ALE
Assuming the marketing-speak means "don't store more than one copy
of a particular chunk of data", then Quantum is, in my opinion, being sort
of disingenuous in calling it an emerging technology. Perhaps they're
going to be the leaders in having a storage subsystem do that kind of
thing "automatically", but there are certainly other products out there
that are already using the same technique to reduce duplication.
One of the first products I ever learned of that did that sort of thing
was, coincidentally, a backup product -- TiBS. Check out Teradactyl's
web site for more info.
If Quantum can make it reliable, seamless, and automatic at the storage
subsystem level, though, then they'll definitely have something many
customers will want.
