Re: [Networker] Legato Networker vs Backup Exec

I used BU Exec for 5 years and changed to Networker last November. I don't
know the cost differences but from an operational side I have opinions.
First Exec give you more real-time information on what it is doing and what
it wants. It tells you it is loading a tape, reading forward, writing,
needs tape #5, etc. right in the one interface that schedules, monitors and
does restores from backups. It is a lot more user friendly.
One thing I do not like about Exec and I do really like about Networker is
how Networker deals with the inevitable little burps in systems and
enterprise backups. Meaning that when you have an issue like tape error;
system off-line; or anything that stops a job from running Exec would
refuse to run subsequent jobs that has the resource that had the issue.
Networker does not seem to care about the status of previous jobs that
failed to run instead it just runs the job as if there were no history. In
other words Networker says if in doubt... run the job. Exec says... if in
doubt fail the job. I would rather it run the job.
Most... if not all... the issues i have had with Networker have been NDMP
and NAS related. The configuration has been a bear and it is still not
right.
