There's a few different ways you can achieve this.

If you are after a reasonably reliable media verification only, the simplest
way is to enable auto-media-verification within the pool that you are using.
Note that you can't enable this in the pre-defined NetWorker pools
(something I've always seen as a very disappointing oversight on
Legato/EMC's part!), so you have to use custom pools.

Complete media verification can be achieved via cloning, which can be
automated, but will typically take as long, if not longer than your backup.
In particular, the level of parallelism with which the data was written to
tape will directly impact the speed of the cloning process. However, the
benefit is that you get a second copy of your savesets, which protects you
much more so from media failure.

If you wanted to do comprehensive media verification without generating a
clone, you'd use the scanner tool, but I wouldn't recommend going down that
path unless you really, really have to, since it's time consuming like
cloning, you don't get any end benefit other than verification out of it,
and it integrates poorly into an autochanger/library environment.

For the most part, auto media verification is a good starting point. Clone
when you can.

Ultimately though remember that being able to read the data back doesn't
guarantee a recovery if the backup wasn't done properly (e.g., backup
inconsistent database files, etc).

Cheers,

Preston.
