The data format on tape is OS independent, no matter the OS or how many bits
it has. The only issue I am aware of is when you have an OS trying to read
blocks on tape larger than it can read. E.g., there used to be an issue with
Windows reading/writing larger than 32K blocks. OpenVMS can write a maximum
63K block size, which can't be read by any other OS. That's not because of
the OS, but because of the block size chosen.

So, the moral is, make sure that any OS can read the block size you choose,
and you'll be fine.

Remember that NetWorker does not allow cross-platform restores. E.g. Linux
64 bit to Linux 32 bit is fine, Linux to Windows, or the other way around,
is not.

I will be migrating a Solaris platform Networker to a Red Hat Linux
platform server in the near future. For reasons other than Networker,
we would like to run the Linux box as a 64 bit OS. I also have a
separate Networker installation on 32 bit Linux that may be called into
play to read tapes from this new 64 bit installation. Can that be done
or do they have to be the same?
