We have two 500GB adv_file devices. Every night we run backups directly
to them, then every day, we stage all the savesets from the adv_file
disks to tapes. So each night we start with empty adv_file devices....
This is how we avoid filling them up... Otherwise if they get full
during a backup, the backup will have to wait for the staging process to
transfer all the savesets from the disk to tape before allowing the
backup to continue... The daily staging is setup via a Windows scheduled
task via a nsradmin command script, but I'm sure cron can be used
also....

So, if data cannot span volumes, what strategy are people using to avoid
running out of space? Are your AFTD devices very large? If so, how
large? Do you strictly control what data goes to each device? How do
you ensure that you do not run out of space on the devices?

Thanks.

Nope. That is the way the AFTD is designed. Unless you want to
terminate existing backups, and restart them to use a second AFTD
device with more room, the only other way is to remove savesets in the
current AFTD device. You can do this in a number of ways, including
deleting them or staging
them
to another volume.

I have 4 1.5 TB adv_file devices. It's split up that way because Linux
2.4 isn't terribly happy about > 2TB physical volumes, and because it
affords some parallelism in cloning from adv_file to our 4 tape drives.

One volume filled up, and I was surprised to find a backup hanging on
"waiting to free adv_file space..."

Is there any way to convince NetWorker (7.2.1, Linux) to continue the
save onto an adv_file device in the same pool that has room, as it would

do with tapes?
