Odd. I suppose it depends on if the marker really is false and how it
got there. I've certainly seen some interactions cause tapes to be
overwritten, but that's usually becuase of a full rewind, not a random
one in the middle.
Your savesets are somewhat large, but you might try cloning them. That
should tell you immediately if the entire saveset is readable. An early
EOF would be detected during the clone.
