Check your SCSI cables, and your bootup messages on your server.

Also, try to run a tar or dd to a blank tape in the drive with a
couple of gigs of nicely random data to the drive.  What speed do you
get then?  

The SDLT 320s should be able to do 16MB/sec easily, without
compression.
