I was musing over how to avoid having the SAS controller...    Someone
here jokingly suggested a USB flash drive... I wonder if we could boot
off a mirror of two flash drives?

But really - on a storage node we won't be putting any appreciable
bandwidth over the SAS controller, so sharing the same PCI-E should not
be a problem.


As for 10GigE... We are constrained because the only 10GigE card that
fits is a PCI-X one...

 So to utilise the other PCI Bus the HBA will have to be a PCI-E. Sun do
indeed have a PCI-E HBA....  Dual 4GB on one card!

I have been planning a storage node design using a V890 .... But I think
I can replace it with a pair of T2000's, and the hardware savings will
hopefully pay for the extra storage node license required.

Yesterday I ran up networker 7.3 on a T2000 just to see if it would
install and run on sol10/T2000 and it did just fine.... I will be
seeking some form of statement of hardware compatibility from EMC on
this.

Next thing is to see what it costs....

The docs seems to indicate:

PCI Ex slot 0 shares  PCIE Bus A with 2 GigE ports and the internal
disks.

PCI Ex slot 1,2 and PCI-X slots 0,1  all share PCIE Bus B with 2GigEs

So there are 2 PCI E buses that everything is divided over?  An HBA in
the fist PCIE slot on PCIE switch/busA will drag down the performance of
the SAS/SATA disks?

Yes, let us know how the GigE or 10GE works in conjunction with some SAN
HBAs on in the slots sharing the PCIE switches/buses.  Solaris 10 is
required here so you should get good network throughput there.
