Jim:

We are running Win2003 and 7.2. I spoke with Legato, and they pointed me
to Microsoft.

The other response that I got had to do with using the install for the
drivers for the tape drives instead of device manager. We are scheduled
to try this at our next maintenance window.

Thanks,
Kathy

Kathy,

I had the same issue. Now, this depends on the version of Windows and
Networker you are running, which I don't see listed below. In my case
this was on Windows 2003 servers when I upgraded from Windows 2000 and
running 7.1. As part of the OS upgrade we moved to STORPORT Drivers for
the HBAs and when I ran an 'inquire' I only got back "TAPE" with no
symbolic names (i.e. \\.\Tape1). I called Legato support and opened a
case which resulted in LGTpa71953. The LGTpa fixed NetWorker's
inability to support Storport drivers under Windows 2003. If you are
using Windows 2000, than this fix is not applicable and you have another
issue.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,
Jim

We have an ADIC Scalar i2k with 10 LTO2 drives that are shared between 6
servers - 4 windows, 2 linux. We had the Scalar's firmware upgraded in
December. After the upgrade, I had problems with the backup server
hanging at the Windows splash screen if it was rebooted. The quick fix
was to turn off the Scalar so that the server could continue to start.
Three weeks ago, some updates were applied to two of the other windows
servers that are attached to the Scalar. When the first server was
restarted, it hung on the Splash screen. I was not involved with these
issues and it was several hours before I associated the hang with the
connection to the Scalar.

While they were trouble shooting the problem, they upgraded the HBAs to
a newer revision in both main file servers, so all zoning for my tape
drives were lost. After the dust settled, I was reinstalling the tape
drives on the servers using the tape drive driver that I had always used
- I guess the new HBAs or the updates to the server didn't like the
drivers, and blue screened the server. We ended up using a driver from
May 2005. I "think" that when the first server blue screened, it
corrupted the registry, because when I run and inquire -lc to get the
tape drive order, I can see the references to the drives, but there are
no tape names (see below). Does anyone know what would cause this and
how to correct it? Legato, EMC and ADIC have been involved with senior
engineers and they are saying it's a Microsoft issue. Microsoft hasn't
been able to help us.

Thanks,
Kathy Stewart
