As I recall, there's an issue with the Linux ST/SG drivers in that it
wants to have a tape in the drive before it will allow you to send
most commands (all?) to the drive.  That might be the issue.  Try the
following:

- put in a tape
- mt -f /dev/st0 setblksize 0
- run tests
- eject tape
- put a new tape in
- run tests.  Do they fail?
- mt setblksize again

and see what happens.
