Our library is SCSI attached. we don't have trouble with tapes marked
full... we did once, but it was to do with bad firmware on our SDLT320
drives... long since fixed...

It is my general perception that tapes being marked full early is a
response by legato when it is getting some sort of error when accessing
a drive - documentation says it marks tapes full when they are faulty,
which is good logic i suppose, but not if it is getting communication
errors. version 7 onwards have SCSI CDI support, which lets networker
discern between different errors reported by tape devices... for example
it can now tell between 'write protected' and 'cleaning required' but if
it does not recognise the CDI code then it's my belief that it falls
back to assuming the tape is faulty...

so my focus would be on your FC to SCSI bridges... have you validated
the hardware configuration with legato? maybe the bridges cannot be
supported with CDI, or perhaps there is some sort of problem with that
firmware you changed.

as usual it's all guesswork on my part.

We got the same problem "not in media index" as you got since we ugrade
from networker 6.1.4 to (7.1.3 w/security patche). We also have change
the
firmware on our (fc to scsi) bridge in the same time. Peter, your
library
is direct attatch or SAN?

We also got a lot of tape mark full before their time. Is there someone
else out there who got that kind of problem and find a solution. Legato
Tech support told us to delete /nsr/mm and do a mmrecov. We done that
but
the problem whent back on our 2 backup server (1 sun, 1 W2K).

Any comment we be appriciated. It begin to be a headache...
