I agree with Davina & Jerry's comments form my experience.

NNNNNNBBBB There is a fundamental database structure change in the move from 6
to 7 (The old nsrres file becomes a resdb using similar structure to the MM &
INDEX dbs) so you cannot "downgrade" Ensure you have good bootstrap &
indexbackups of your 6 installation before upgrading (savegrp -O). Check the
Installation guide and the release notes for 712.

The version 7 Documentation is considerably improved over 6 and includes all
the procedures you will need.

NW7 strictly enforces licensing so check that your environment is properly
licensed for the features you use. (particularly Full And Dedicated storage
nodes, Clusters, and NW Modules)

Also ensure you check out the Tech Bulletins on the Documentation cd Search for
RENAME and MOVE you will find details on renaming and moving Networker servers
and clients. (It's all about maintaining the Client IDs on the NW Server's
client.)
Also there is a more up to date, and more detailed precedure for moving NW
Servers on the Knowledge Base.

For the move you contemplate, I would suggest doing the upgrade to 7.2.1 "In
Place" on your existing box, then, as suggested, use the Tech bulletin
instructions for renaming and Networker Server Disaster Recovery Procedure in
the Disaster Recovery Guide to "Move" the installation to the new box.

Good Luck

I'm going to migrate to a new server and have questions about how to go about
it. They are both Solaris systems - the old server is running version 6.1.2 of
networker with a 8 slot DLT autochanger on it. I'll be installing networker
7.2 on the new server and it has a 17 slot LTO 2 drive. I have several months
of backups on the old DLT's that I would like to save so I'm not sure how to do
the migration. I only have a license for 9 slot autochanger so if I move the
old DLT autochanger to the new server in addition to the LTO autochanger I'm
not sure how I can access the old tapes to do recoveries. Is there a way to do
this or does it require a new license? I'd rather not buy a 2nd autochanger
license for the few months that I need access to the old tapes so not sure if
there is some other way to do this. I don't know if the networker license
would let me access the DLT drive as just a DLT and I could manually work the
autochanger to select tapes since this doesn't
happen often. Also looking through the manual I don't see info on how
to migrate the old indexes over to the new machine - can I just copy over the
old nsr directory tree and install as if I were doing an upgrade? Will I have
a problem with this since the tape drive is now the new LTO autochanger? Any
hints would be appreciated (or pointers to the proper section of the manuals).

Rick

Have you noticed that a "slight tax increase" costs us at least two hundred
dollars a year, but a "substantial tax cut" saves us maybe thirty cents?
