While communicating with Legato support about the NetWare (really any
pre-v6 client) restore issues at 7.1.3, we were informed that the bundled
SNAPSHOT.NLM was no longer supported by Legato, as of the 4.22 NetWorker
for NetWare client pack.
That NLM is what was used for backing up open files on our NetWare
clients, in particular GroupWise. Without SNAPSHOT.NLM, we need to find
some other way to back up open files.
First, does anyone know where this "de-support" was announced? We've been
unable to find anything about the end of support for SNAPSHOT.NLM in any
Legato documentation or on the web site.
Second, what are other sites doing for open file support, since
SNAPSHOT.NLM is no longer supported? In particular, how are people doing
GroupWise backups? There's a new GroupWise flag (or perhaps it's a
separate NLM, I forget) for TSAFS that's supposed to allow backups of
open GroupWise files, but Legato has also indicated that TSAFS shouldn't
be used with the NetWorker 4.22 client. Legato still recommends using
TSA600, until they can make a susequent client work with TSAFS.
How are other sites handling this? We know a true V7 NetWorker client is
coming, probably late in 2005, and we also know that Novell is making more
of their products (like GroupWise) available under Linux, but we can't
wait 6-12 months for either of those two options. We need to have
reliable backups of open files on NetWare *now*.
Any suggestions, comments, or even commiseration appreciated,
