As Davina mentioned, the /etc/stinit.def is mandatory.
A good starting template can be downloaded from
ftp://ftp.legato.com/pub/HW_Support/compatguide/stinit.def.
If your devices do not show up in there it will be quite easy to use an
existing template and adjust for your specific drives.
You can test if your drives properly initialize by running the command
"stinit -vv". 
You will be told if your devices could be or could not be initialized.
