The service is set to automatic on my box, but it was in the stopping state.
I have killed it, so we'll see if it runs tonight. I am running 7.1.3, but I
suspect the problem is with W2K itself...

Thanks!

Yes I've seen this as well. I've currently got a call with Legato open about
this (don't have the case ID handy at present)

It appears to only affect W2K servers with removable storage service in a
manual state. The system db saveset starts the service however when stopping
the service it goes into a stopping state causing subsequent system db
savesets to fail. I've only noticed this on 7.1 and 7.1.1, I haven't tried
7.1.2/3 yet. The only permanent fix I have at the moment is to disable the
removable storage service (if the W2K box has tape devices you use with
NetWorker it should be disabled anyway). Funnily enough this will cause
another bug if your NetWorker version is 7.1 as 7.1 can't handle a removable
storage service in a disabled state correctly (again don't have bug ID handy
I'll re-post with case and bug ID's when I'm back in the office).
This is a very intermittent problem. It's not happening every night across
multiple W2K servers.

To avoid re-booting the server I use a utility called process explorer from
sysinternals.com. Use find handle and enter the service name for removable
storage (NtmsSvc) this will return the PID you need to kill for the svchost
which has the service in a stopping state.

Hi all,

Occasionally I am having a problem where the SYSTEM DB: saveset will hang.
NWAdmin shows it in a saving state, but it never actually saves any data. I
have seen this on a few W2K boxes running SQL Server. Rebooting the box
fixes the problem. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how to fix it
besides rebooting?

Thanks!
