OS: Windows 2000 SP4
Legato Networker Version 7.1.2
Running Netware, Microsoft, Unix and Linux clients.
ESL9322S2 Tape Library 5 x 160/320 drives
Netware clients run to disk
Good afternoon
I would like to know if anyone has any ideas on the correct block size set-
up and how it all works?
When running the
mt -f \\.\Tape0 status command on our networker server it displays the below
C:\Documents and Settings\32200>mt -f \\.\tape0 status
\\.\tape0:
Media Capacity = 147.14GByte
Media Remaining = 154.00GByte
Media Blocksize = 0
Media Partition Count = 0
Media is not write protected
default blocksize = 65536
maximum blocksize = 262144
minimum blocksize = 4
MaximumPartitionCount = 0
Partition = 0
Logical block position = 17396
EOTWarningZoneSize = 0
CompressionEnabled
Features:
Performs LONG erase operation
Performs erase from beginning of partition only
Performs IMMEDIATE erase operation
Can report maximum tape capacity
Can report amount of tape remaining
Support FIXED block length mode
Support VARIABLE block length mode
Returns errors on write if tape is write - protected
Supports hardware data compression
Can provide current absolute device block address
Can provide current logical block address and partition
Can physically load and / or unload tape
Support PREVENT / ALLOW Media Removal
Performs IMMEDIATE rewind operations
Allows Setting FIXED LENGTH or VARIABLE block sizes
Performs IMMEDIATE Load / Unload operations
Allows hardware data compression to be enabled / disabled
Can position tape to an absolute physical block
Can position tape to a logical block(and partition)
Can position tape to END of RECORDED DATA
Can perform tape record positioning(backwards / forwards)
Can perform tape file positioning(backwards / forwards)
Can move backwards across records or filemarks or setmarks
Can write FILEMARKS
Performs IMMEDIATE tape mark write operations
This shows that our default block size is 64kb (65536/1024=64) and our
maximum block size is 256kb (262144/1024=256). We have specified the
maximum block size in regedt32 (the registry editor) as 256kb. This was
changed to allow unix to restore from previous volumes written to in an
older drive.
When viewing the volume block size in the Legato Networker gui (can be seen
in devices, select a device, right click, edit, select volume tab), it
shows that our volume blcok size is 128kb.
When viewing the device block size in the gui (can be seen in devices,
select a device, right click, edit, select configuration), it displays
handler default as our device block size.
The above is true for microsoft Unix and Linux backups but not Netware.
Netware runs straight to disk. When viewing the volume block size in the
Legato Networker gui it shows 32kb (can be seen in devices, select a disk
device, right click, edit, select volume tab).
The volume block size is the same for all Operating systems.
So, my questions are...............Does the Networker gui override the
Microsoft OS or the OS override the Networker gui?
Do they all need to be the same block size OS and gui?
Is there a maximum block size for Netware?
Does anyone know what Handler Default means? Does it mean the driver?
Is there a perfect block size figure for 160/320 drives?
Is there a perfect block size figure for 110/220 drives?
Thank you in advance.
kind regards
