This sounds like a known issue, LGTpa66936.  This was an issue found in
NetWorker 7.1.2 where backups to a Adv File Device would intermittently
fail with "update of ss failed".  In some situations nsrmmd would cause
save sessions to abort with a failure to update SS message.

To install:

- Shutdown NetWorker
- Rename ..\nsr\bin\nsrmmd.exe to nsrmmd.old
- Copy in hot-fix nsrmmd.sep17 to ..\nsr\bin\ and rename to nsrmmd.exe
- Start NetWorker

Note: If your Advanced File Devices are also on Storage Nodes then I
recommend this process be carried out on these hosts as well.
