But as long as I have the index(I store indexes in their own tape pool),
can I run something like nsrck -t "date" -L7 clientname and restore the
index for that tape's day?  I'm only going to recycle the data on the
monthly tape to reuse for next month's backup.

        Just think of the clone as of another pointer that is linked to
the same place (same index).
        It does not have separate entries in the index database.
        That basically means if you expire either clone or the original
volume all the indexes will be gone.
        So, answering your question, you would need to scan the clone
tape to restore the index.
