You do not say too much about your infrastructure.
Assuming the tape drives are connected to a FC switch and both Netapps
also connect to that switch, you can share the drives between the two
Netapps.
You will need 1 DDS license for each shared drive. You will of course
have to reconfigure your jukebox.

Subject: [Networker] ndmp configuration on netapp

Hi,

Currently I have the following situation;

Two Netapp files being backed up via NDMP. Each filer is attached to a
jukebox with 2 drives. The drives are assigned to each jukebox, ie 1:1.
The index files generated are backed up to a second jukebox directly
attached to the Legato server.

Because there is a mismatch of disk capacity on the netapps, one
finishes well in advance of the other on incremental and full backups.

I would like to reconfig the drives to pool the drives, ie netapp1 takes
both drives and completes ndmp operations. It then releases the drives
and they are taken by the second netapp. This will improve utilisation
of resources ( the under used drive on the smaller netapp ) and shorten
the backup window for the filers as a whole.

Is these feasible, and if so, are there any pointers on setting up or
operational issues. One thing that springs to mind is if both filers are
set to backup at the same time, and one grabs both drives, will the
second one simply wait for the drive or will the ndmp timeout and backup
fail ?

Tks for any assistance.

-Bob
