This line uses scanner to feed the raw data from the tape into a pipe.
It then expects uasm to read the datastream and restore it to disk.

Uasm only reads networker client streams.  Since there is no
specification for NDMP data streams, it cannot read it.  (Many NDMP data
streams are compatible with dump/ufsdump instead).

Right.  The scanner is succeeding and sending the data to the pipe.

Well, I wouldn't expect the above to make a tape browsable, even if it
weren't an NDMP tape.

Is the tape in the media database?  If so, I'd probably prefer to do a
nsrck -L7 <client> to remerge the old index.
