I don't see how.  I mean 'tar' doesn't take standard input anyway.  It
has to read a filesystem to be able to produce an archive.

Don't have a big enough scratch space to restore, then tar?  That's
obviously the simple way to do it.  I can see that would be a problem if
you got into huge savesets.
