David,

Probably the first thing you have to consider is that you will have to pay
for the advanced file type device and not for the file type device.

If it were up to me I would go for the advanced file type device (AFTD)
asically treats disk - like disk. With FTD you treat your disk like tape -
so you cannot do backups and restores at the same time. You dont have the
capability to extend you disk size "on the fly". When your FTD runs out of
spave you either have to have another one "tape" setup or your backup fails
- with the AFTD your backups wont fail - instead it will autmatically go
through the savesets on the volume and check what can be recycled - if there
still isnt space it will wait for admin input.

It as well writes with a different ASM to the AFTD and you will probably get
better speeds and even might get some compression to disk (touch wood).
Overall a much better option, but as mentioned, you will have to pay for the
AFTD.

Regards,
Riaan

Hi all,

I am installing NetWorker 7.1.2 on a new server (running RHEL 3.0). I
am planning to use the DiskBackup functionality to backup one of my
servers to a RAID of 1 TB. I was wondering if I had to use a File Type
or an Advanced File Type for that device?

On page 255 of the Administration Guide one can read that the Advanced
File Type is designed for very large disk devices and table 39 on page
256 explains the differences between the two but still I am that sure
which one would suit me the best...

Any idea?

Best regards,
David
