Do you have the "portmap" service installed and running?  Do a

  ps axuw | grep portmap

If you do not see it running then start it

/etc/init.d/portmap start.

Also if you are using IPTABLES then make sure you add a rule in hosts.allow
for All:  All and leave hosts.deny blank.  This will allow you to open up
tcpwrappers but restrict with IPTABLES.

/etc/hosts.* are empty on the server, so rpcinfo -p localhost should work,

We use our own iptables scripts, and our NW server has full access. Even
stopping iptables does not change anything. :-(
