Hello Vince,

One way to help with this is to create several groups of users, and run them
in parallel. Most Exchange servers can run 5 to 10 MB jobs at once without
being unduly stressed. Your results might vary with the capabilities of
your Exchange Server hardware. The disadvantage of this is it is more
difficult to manage.

For what it is worth, there is no API dedicated to performing this
operation. We use MAPI -- the Exchange Server thinks we are a user mail
client. Many Exchange experts advise against brick-level backups entirely.
But they can be useful for those who have the hardware capacity for them.

Thanks,
_Scott

I would say your experience is fairly typical. The mailbox level backup is
painfully slow. Not really networkers fault just the way Exchange is.

We only use brick level backups for a few VIPS, because of how slow it is.

If you have lots of disk space you could use exmerge to export the mailboxes
to disk then back up the PSTs. This would prevent tying up a tape drive
forever.

Client: NetWorker 7.1.1_rtm Build 277 under Win2k,

Hi Gurus,

We are having problems with backups of our Exchange 2000 server. It is
taking an absolute age to backup our mailboxes (approx. 470) at brick-level,
I had to cancel a session after 14 hours because it was still running! The
problem seems to centre around the time it takes the Exchange NWM to export
mailboxes (which vary in size from a few MBs to over 1GB) to temporary files
before passing them to the NetWorker server .

Has anyone out there experienced similar problems, if so, what did you do
about it? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Vince
