Sure enough, the system _did_ come with an aic_7xxx card - in a separate
cardboard box, and it was installed by the installer. I had someone put
it in, swap the cables, and voila - instant changer.
Sigh. Can't trust installers these days... :)

FWIW, back when I was doing Netfinity server support at IBM we didn't
recommend customers run tape/autochangers off the IBM ServeRAID either.
All the IBM tape configs I remember came with an aic_7xxx
recommendation.
I would find a nice u160 scsi card and connect the autochanger to that.
While you're at it, if possible, I would put the u160 with autochanger,
MegaRAID with drives, adn network interfaces on separate PCI buses and
IRQs.
