I've never seen this, but the "to this *file system*" bit seems like a
clue.  My poor windows-using friends have mentioned on occassion that
the "FAT32" filesystem isn't as secure as "NTFS".  Is it possible you're
trying to recover a file that was backed up on an NTFS partition on
machine B to a FAT32 partition on machine A?
