We use jfs and multiple 3ware controllers, more ram and definitely see a
much higher speed than that.

All the tests I have seen have shown ext3 to be safe but slow. Have you
tried mounting your partition as ext2?

We definitly don't have our sessions set that high.

Have you looked at sar to see your resource usage?
