Matthew,

Some more detail in what SpectraLogic told me that Sony had said...

The tech from SpectraLogic said that the firmware upgrade was needed because
Sony said that the older firmware on our AIT-3 drives were having problems
with positing AIT-2 media. Sometimes the AIT-3 drives would not be able to
figure out precisely the current position on AIT-2 media, and therefore
would return an error such as end-of-tape or something else. The new
firmware, Sony said, fixed this problem so that AIT-3 drives can precisely
follow the magnetic tracks on AIT-2 media or something like that. I was
told from the SpectraLogic techs, that in essence Sony admitted that even
though Sony had advertised that AIT-3 drives were completely compatible with
AIT-2 media, Sony says that there were in fact some problems with AIT-2
media in AIT-3 drives and the firmware upgrade was supposed to fix the known
problems. This is, of course, all second-hand information. I make no claim
that I'm accurately portraying Sony.

I'm guessing that either a DIP switch change and/or a firmware upgrade may
help.
