Hi Olaf,
There is a quite lengthy discussion in the following link from Microsoft's
site concerning the steps required in recovering the Active Directory. In it
they use NTBackup for the operations, but I think the concepts will still
apply.

I haven't tried anything like it (...and I'm now wondering about the day
I'll have to) , but its an interesting document to read nonetheless.
(If you already aware of it, please disregard this post)

Hope this helps,

Panos

| Hi all,
|
| how can I do a disaster recovery of a Windows 2000 AD
| controller to similar
| hardware? I read the "Windows Admin guide" and the "Disaster Recovery
| Guide", both are version 6.1.
|
| Nevertheless restoring that server fails regularly. After
| doing a normal
| recovery and rebooting, I have a server that freezes just
| before one normaly
| sees that "starting Windows" splash screen. When doing a save
| set recover, I
| just getting the old desktop icons back, that's all.
|
| NW version is 6.1.3 on both server and client.
|
| Conclusion: all our Windows 2000 backups are unusuable. This
| failed desaster
| recovery was only a test, but if a server would fail right now... :-(
