We did extensive testing with our DR site. The conclusion was that LTO2
drives not only read LTO1 tapes, but they read them 1.5 to 2 times faster
than LTO1 drives.

YMMV. I strongly suggest testing this in your environment, with your
existing LTO1 drives and LTO2s from the manufacturer you are planning to
use for production. All indications are you should have smooth going.
