Hey all,

I'm putting together some numbers for a backup hardware upgrade for
next year and I wanted to get some opinions.

My current environment:

Solstice backup 6.1.2 will be at 7.x before I purchase new hardware

1 Sun 4x480 E450/2.6 will be upgrading to 8 soon(see next email :-))

210 clients growing by about 60-70 a year.

My current choice is below:

One 2x1.2Ghz Sun 280R - Master server doing indexes and self backups
only

One 4x1.05Ghz Sun V880 - Storage Node performing all the backups
attached to 10 9940B drives

Other consideration:

Since the nsrd seems to be a bottleneck, for the master server I was
considering going with some thing like the Sun V65x running RedHat since
it has 3Ghz CPUs. I know well that all clock cycles are not equal, but
1.8Ghz is quite a difference. Does any one have experience with using
redhat/intel as their master server with sparc based storage nodes?

Also considering two 2x1.04Ghz V480 with 5 9940B drives each to spread
the IO across two systems rather than one v880. Do you think there is
an advantage to having multiple smaller storage nodes or one larger
storage node?

Thanks,

Joel
