Right now we have a Qualstar library with 126 slots and 3 AIT drives -- 2
AIT-3 and 1 AIT-2 (complicated reasons largely having to do with money.)
We also have 2 AIT-2 libraries running Retrospect. I've been using these
since April of 2000 (You know, the month in whihc you KNEW you should
have unloaded all your dot.com and storage stocks.) I'd used AIT for two
years previously with DEC Unix. In that time, I've had one tape failure.
Currently, the Qualstar library backs up about 4 terabytes of data using
Legatos "quarterly" model. I'd say it was an enviable record. Now I
can imagine more industrial environments with requirements for greater
speed, etc., but I'd hardly call what we're doing Consumer level. Is
this simply another example of many-good-solutions-available with zealots
insisting that people take sides?
