That's a very good question. In fact it is on my list to review again. As
for how we got to this point, it is a bit of a political story. I manage
the Intel side of things and we came into the SAN game about 3 years ago.
Our midrange Unix side had been using a SAN for several years and it was
decided by management that we should "use the same tool to begin a
heterogeneous SAN". Well as many on this list know, heterogeneous SANs were
not very manageable from many perspectives 3 years ago, and some might say
still not today. Keep in mind both sides are HP/Compaq/DEC (pick your name)
Storageworks. So heterogeneous to us is OS only. Politically combining
these groups here is a real challenge, and I am trying my best to start a
Storage team tied to neither group politically (wish me luck).

Sorry, back to topic now.
The major reason then is that we were trying to use what the midrange team
had already been using (Legato on Storageworks SAN). However, in a fair
evaluation, I am not sure I would have chosen Legato for our Intel side of
the house. But given politics, I did not have a choice then. Now,
management seems more flexible, especially considering the Legato/EMC deal
and the fact that Netbackup can now cover Unix clients thus providing a
possible combined backup platform there as well.

I am sure this story could be repeated by others. This is mine.

Matt,
Could you explain why you use Legato over Veritas for your SAN currrently?
Also what SAN you are using?

Good story on this topic.
We run Legato for our SAN-based backup environments and Veritas for our
remote non-SAN equipped offices, thus giving us a
relationship with both companies.

Last week the Veritas rep takes us out for lunch and was REALLY trying hard
to get some leverage on the SAN backup business. I
finally broke him down and he told me that for every $5,000USD in sales he
gets from an existing Legato account before the end of
the year, he gets one chance at a Porsche 911. Pretty nice sales incentive.
He also told us he would convert any Legato license at
no cost. We just had to pay maintenance on the licenses. Talk about a
buyer's market!

Anybody else getting lunches from Veritas?

It's me again. Somehow the link to the site was removed or didn't work.

Just go to Veritas website and you can see in their front page the link.

Veritas is really working on it, take a look at this site.

They're getting pretty aggressive.
